From the Times-Tribune:
The Lackawanna County Prison Board publicly apologized Wednesday to the woman who gave birth in a prison cell last month, saying the nurse who treated her failed to properly monitor her labor and unnecessarily delayed taking her to the hospital.
County Judge Vito Geroulo, a board member, said the unnamed nurse committed “serious errors of judgment” in caring for Shakira Staten and called the care “inadequate and unacceptable.”
“Everyone involved in the Lackawanna County Prison and this board regrets that the medical care rendered to Shakira Staten and her child was not as ... adequate or as professional as it could have been,” Judge Geroulo said after the board met privately to discuss an internal prison review of the birth. “And for this we apologize.”
