Lackawanna County Prison Warden Janine M. Donate (pictured, right) officially recieved a 12.5 percent raise yesterday, before the internal review about the July birth of Shakira Staten's child was finished. The raise was a successful attempt to keep Donate from leaving Lackawanna for a county prison in Missouri.
County commissioners Cordaro and Munchak (pictured, left, middle) both told staff writer Borys Krawczeniuk of the Scranton Times that the raise was awarded for a job well done. County Controller John Mellow commended Donate for spearheading Lackawana's complete 180 turnaround from a "disaster to a first-class prison." In 2003, the prison was ablaze in scandal after stories of inmate beatings and inmates being used for personal matters by several prison officials.
Not everyone was in favor of issuing the raise at this time, however. County commissioner Mike Washo abstained from the vote, saying, "I don't think anybody should be given a raise in the midst of an investigation." We're inclined to agree, Mr. Washo.
